Phils add infielders, pitcher on day 2 of draft

After taking power with their first pick, the Phillies went for speed and infield depth in Round 2 and beyond.

The Phils selected Roman Quinn, a 5-10, 170-pound shortstop from Port St. Joe (Fla.) High School. Quinn, a Florida State signee, was chosen with the 66th overall pick. Baseball America had him at No. 73 overall in their pre-draft rankings and listed him as the fastest player in their top 200. Quinn hits righthanded and has been dabbling in switch-hitting. His speed makes him a potential candidate for the outfield.

With the 90th overall pick, the Phils took Harold Martinez, a third baseman from the University of Miami. Martinez, a 6-3 208-pound junior, was a 19th round pick of the Rangers in 2008. Martinez hit .301, but his power numbers slumped from a year ago. After leading Miami with 21 homers as a sophomore, Martinez had just three homers in 209 at-bats for the 'Canes this season.

In the third round, No. 120 overall, the Phillies grabbed their first pitcher of the day with the selection of lefthander Adam Morgan, a junior from the University of Alabama. Morgan, an All-Star at the prestigious Cape Cod League last summer, was just 5-7 with a 4.64 ERA. Morgan (6-1, 195) needs to up the velocity on his fastball, which is generally in the 87-90 range according to Baseball America.

The Phils next pick (No. 151) was Nebraska junior third baseman Cody Asche, who hit .327 with 12 homers and 56 RBI for the Cornhuskers this season. His lefthanded power is an attractive asset, but his defensive acumen as a pro third baseman is questionable. Asche (6-2, 198) could move to the outfield or perhaps even catcher. His last name is pronounced ASH-ee.

In the fifth round, the Phils grabbed Mitchell Walding, a 6-3, 195-pound shortstop out of St. Mary's High School in Stockton, Calif.

The Phillies used their only pick Monday night (No. 39 overall) to select Larry Greene, a raw, power-hitting outfielder from Georgia's Berrien County H.S. Today's draft runs through Round 30. It will conclude Wednesday through Round 50 or when every team passes on making a pick.

From here on out, the Phils have the final pick in each of the remaining rounds.
