Phillies Minor League Report: Anthony Hewitt hits walk-off home run in Reading win

Here's a rundown on how the Phillies' minor league teams fared on Wednesday, May 22:

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

The IronPigs (20-25) were idle on Wednesday. They will begin a four-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Ethan Martin (4-2, 5.23 ERA) is slated to take the hill.

Lehigh Valley is currently in fourth place and 6.5 games out of first place in the International League North.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double A

The Fightin Phils rallied to beat the Altoona Curve, 7-5, at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.

Catcher Cameron Rupp knocked a three-run home run over the center field wall in the first inning to give the Fightin Phils an early lead.

Right-handed starter Hector Neris couldn't hold the lead.

In the third inning, Neris ran into trouble. After getting the first two outs, he allowed a two-out single, followed by an RBI triple. An inning later, he was tagged for three solo home runs.

Neris finished his outing with four runs allowed on six hits in four innings pitched.

After the teams traded runs late in the game, Reading found themselves down a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rupp and second baseman Albert Cartwright led off the inning with base hits. After a strikeout, the stage was set for Anthony Hewitt. The right fielder sent the fans home happy with a walk-off, three-run home run.

The win lifted the Fightin Phils to 18-26 on the season. Reading will look to sweep a four-game series on Thursday at 11:35 a.m. Right-hander David Buchanan (1-5, 5.65 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Fightin Phils.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

The Threshers defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 3-2, at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.

The Stone Crabs took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Threshers answered in the third inning.

Catcher Logan Moore and center fielder Kyrell Hudson reached on base hits to lead off the inning and set the table. Second baseman Carlos Alonso tied the game with an RBI groundout and left fielder Aaron Altherr followed with a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.

Charlotte responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at two.

The Threshers took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Shortstop Jonathan Roof led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Right-handed starter Perci Garner picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six.

Closer Colton Murray recorded his fourth save of the season.

The Threshers improved to 23-22 on the season and will close out the series on Thursday.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 8-6, at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood Township.

Shortstop Roman Quinn led off the game with a single. He stole second base and scored after a pair of groundouts.

However, right-handed starter Miguel Nunez struggled for the BlueClaws. Lakewood ended up playing from behind for the rest of the game.

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth inning, the BlueClaws pulled within a run with a sacrifice fly by catcher Justin Dalles.

The Shorebirds added two runs in the fifth, but again the BlueClaws crawled back within a run with a two-run sixth. Center fielder Carlos Tocci singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Dalles also added another RBI with a two-out single.

Lakewood allowed a run in both the sixth and seventh innings and trailed 7-4 in the eighth inning. The BlueClaws pushed two runs across to make it a one-run game. Left fielder Larry Greene drew a bases-loaded walk and second baseman Alejandro Villalobos hit a two-out RBI single.

But the BlueClaws couldn't score any more runs.

Nunez (4-1, 3.74 ERA) took the loss, allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings.

The loss dropped the BlueClaws to 19-25 on the season and will begin a four-game series against the West Virginia Power on Thursday. Southpaw Yoel Mecias (2-2, 4.32 ERA) will start for the BlueClaws.
