Phillies beat Yankees, 6-2, in Grapefruit League game

CLEARWATER, FLA. - Starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez pitched five perfect innings in Bright House Field against the Yankees Thursday, leading the Phillies to a 6-2 victory.

It marks the first time this spring the 4-10-2 Phillies have won back-to-back games.

Hernandez allowed a leadoff single to Yankees second baseman Scott Sizemore in the sixth and was then taken out of the game. He was replaced by Jeremy Horst, who got out of the inning without allowing another hit.

Hernandez earned the victory and lower his earned run average from 3.24 to 2.03. He retired 10 batters on ground outs and struck out two.

The Phillies scored three runs in the third, cobbling together four consecutive singles to spark the rally before they made an out.

Hitting singles were Ben Revere, Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd and Ryan Howard. A run scored when Carlos Ruiz ground into a double play. Revere was 2-for-4, raising his spring batting average to .323.

They added three more runs in the eighth on two singles and two doubles.

Reid Brignac's double off the right-field wall scored Kevin Frandsen and Tommy Joseph's double to deep right scored Brignac.

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins did not play in the game. Freddy Galvis played short and batted ninth. He was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Rollins and Galvis are both now hitting .133.

The Yankees scored two in the seventh with the first coming on a Jacoby Ellsbury solo homer.

Four Phillies pitchers combined to limit the Yankees to four hits. Two of the hits and both runs were charged to Horst.

Ken Giles replaced Horst in the seventh and pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball.

Brad Lincoln pitched the ninth, retiring the side in order.

The game was played before a sellout crowd of 9,003.

The Phillies travel to Bradenton on Friday to pay the Pirates.
