The Phillies will receive two draft picks in June's draft for losing reliever Ryan Madson to the Reds, but won't get a first-round pick in return, thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement.
The Phillies will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds, and the selection before the Reds' second-round pick. Those picks are currently Nos. 38 and No. 72.
Madson is part of a special class of five players designated in the new CBA for the interim year before the new system fully goes into effect next offseason. Those six players were deemed Type A free agents, but a determination was made that their signing with another team would mean lesser compensation for the team that lost them.
This will mean virtually no difference for the Phillies, because Madson landed with the Reds. Since Madson was a Type A free agent who was offered salary arbitration, the Phillies previously would have gotten the Reds' first-round pick and a sandwich pick. However, the top 15 picks in the draft are protected. The Reds are selecting 14th based on their 2011 record, so the Phillies would have gotten their second-round pick instead.
The other players in the free agent group are Heath Bell, Kelly Johnson, Michael Cuddyer and Josh Willingham.
Under the old system, the Phillies would have received the Reds' first-round pick and a sandwich pick for losing a Type A free agent.
The new CBA calls for abolishing the system that relied on the "Type A" and "Type B" designations. Teams instead will have to make qualifying offers.
Madson reportedly has agreed to a 1-year, $8.5 million deal, pending a physical and a signed contract.
In 491 career games, including 18 starts, Madson is 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves.
