Phillies prospect Roman Quinn ruptured his right Achilles tendon while running sprints during an offseason workout, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.

The shortstop was working out near his Florida home and "it just popped," according to Joe Jordan, the Phillies' director of player development.

Quinn is out indefinitely. There is no timetable for his return.

"This is really unfortunate," Jordan said to Salisbury about Quinn's injury. "He's a speed guy. It's definitely going to set him back because his legs are such a big part of his game."

Salisbury reports that Quinn already had surgery and started a rehab program for the injury. While recovering, Jordan said that the 20-year-old may also have surgery on a slow-healing wrist.

More on Quinn from Salisbury:

Quinn, 20, was the Phillies' second-round pick in 2011. He was rated the organization's second-best prospect by Baseball America heading into the 2013 season. The publication recently tabbed him as the Phillies' fifth-best prospect entering 2014. The slip downward can at least be partially attributed to Quinn's missing significant time in 2013 with a fractured bone in his left wrist.

There is some good news, however, down on the Phillies' farm.

Catcher Tommy Joseph will head to Latin America and play in the Dominican winter league after fully recovering from a concussion injury that sidelined him for most of the 2013 season.
