Phillies sign reliever as Mujica lands elsewhere

The Phillies' involvement in pursuing Cardinals setup man Edward Mujica has ended, with Mujica signing with the Red Sox on a two-year deal worth $9.5 million.

Not even the allure of Ruben Amaro's patented three-year deal for a reliever could land Mujica; either that, or the Phillies were not very interested in Mujica in the first place. They did bring in reliever Brad Lincoln with a trade with the Blue Jays, and continued their progress in the bullpen today by signing pitcher Jeff Manship to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

The 28-year-old righty debuted in the Majors in 2009, playing four years in the Twins organization as a farmhand and as a spot starter. He threw 85.2 innings for them over the years, with a 6.20 ERA and -0.9 WAR.

Cut by the Twins in 2012, Manship got picked up by the Rockies, with whom he thre 30.2 innings with an ERA of 7.04, before getting outrighted off the roster in October. For his career, Manship has amassed a 6.42 ERA and 67 ERA+ over 116.1 innings with 74 strikeouts and 44 walks.
