Robinson Cano signs with Seattle

After a turbulent morning during which the deal appeared to have dissolved, the Mariners have agreed to terms with second baseman Robinson Cano in a 10-year deal worth $240 million.

Reports earlier today indicated that Cano's agent, Jay-Z, had countered Seatte's deal with a $252 million offer that had incensed Mariners reps and ended negotiations. However, it was later reported by Ken Rosenthal that talks were still very much alive.

Now, the deal appears to be in place, and Seattle has its new second baseman. 31-year-old Cano, who has only ever played for the Yankees in his nine-year career, has accrued 45.6 WAR and a lifetime stat line of .309/.355/.504. He is a five time All-Star with five Silver Sluggers and two Gold Gloves.

This was a big move for the small market Mariners. Working theories suggest that the Mariners are using the Cano deal to establish that they mean business, and will add further key pieces to come.
