Phillies will have trouble finding time for Hyun Soo Kim

Hyun Soo Kim played sparingly this season with Baltimore and will find himself in a similar situation on Sunday, when he joins the Phillies as a reserve outfielder.

The Phillies acquired Kim on Friday night as part of the trade that sent Jeremy Hellickson to the Orioles. Kim, a lefthanded hitter, had just 125 at-bats with Baltimore and batted .232 with a .593 OPS. He will not cut into the playing time of Aaron Altherr, Nick Williams, or Odubel Herrera, who have solidified themselves as starters.

"I don't know how much time I'll be able to get for Kim," manager Pete Mackanin said. "It's a conundrum."

The Phillies also received Garrett Cleavinger, a minor-league lefthanded reliever, and bonus money to spend on international free agents. Kim, 29, will be  a free agent after the season and will likely not be pursued by the Phillies. The real return of the Hellickson deal will be Cleavinger and the extra money the Phillies can spend on the international market. Cleavinger was a third-round pick in 2015. He will join double-A Reading after having a 6.28 ERA this season with Baltimore's double-A affiliate.

"We definitely like his arm. He still needs some work. He's a project, but he's a pretty interesting project to turn over to our player development group," general manager Matt Klentak said. "We think our player development staff on the pitching side does a really good job, and we're excited to see what they can do with Garrett. This guy, two years ago, was a third-round pick. He doesn't come out of nowhere. We obviously like his strikeout work quite a bit."

Triple-A Lehigh Valley manager Dusty Wathan called righthander Pedro Beato on Friday night. The manager had a message to deliver.

"He said he wanted me to cut his son's hair but that I couldn't because I had to get to Philly and I was promoted," said Beato, who doubles as a clubhouse barber. "It was awesome."

Beato, 30, returned to the majors Saturday for the first since since 2014.  It had been a long wait for the reliever, who took Hellickson's spot on the roster. Beato worked as Lehigh Valley's closer and had a 2.72 ERA in 44 games.

"It's always in the back of your mind like, 'When is it going to happen?' But in the end, it's something that you can't think about," Beato said. "Because if you do, it's going to hurt you in the long run if you're paying attention to things you can't control."

Beato cut several teammates' hair this spring when he was with the Phillies. He has carried clippers into every clubhouse on his journey. But they did not come to Citizens Bank Park on Saturday.

"I forgot them," Beato said. "I brought everything down with me. But I forgot them. I can't believe it."

The Phillies will face knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on Sunday. Vince Velasquez will start for the Phillies. … Mackanin wants to bat Aaron Altherr second against lefthanders and Freddy Galvis second against righthanders.
