Expectations last summer were high but tempered for the 76ers. The 52-win season, playoff appearance, and second-round exit exceeded all expectations.

Joel Embiid was healthy, Ben Simmons was electric, and the Sixers became a must-see basketball team. But, the season wasn't without its bumps (yes, talking about Markelle Fultz). Then came one of the strangest offseasons in NBA history.

Get up to speed on what has happened with the Sixers since they lost.

Personnel

The Bryan Colangelo burner account saga was truly a doozy for all involved. The Sixers general manager was alleged to be linked to multiple anonymous Twitter accounts. An internal investigation later revealed that Colangelo's wife, Barbara Bottini, was involved in the operating of the accounts, which made disparaging remarks about players and executives and released non-public team information. The events led to Colangelo parting ways with the Sixers, leaving the team GM-less.

Brett Brown immediately took over in an interim capacity, but as the summer dragged on, he remained, and still remains, in charge.

Assistant coach Lloyd Pierce accepted a job as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, and Brown added Monty Williams to his coaching staff. Assistant coaches Billy Lange and Kevin Young will also be on the bench with Brown.

The Sixers, while in GM limbo, promoted a number of front-office staff personnel. Elton Brand remains GM of the Delaware Blue Coats and was named vice president of basketball operations for the Sixers. Alex Rucker and Marc Eversley added "senior" to their titles of vice president of analytics and strategy and vice president of player personnel, respectively. Ned Cohen, previously the vice president of basketball operations and chief of staff, was promoted to assistant general manager.

Late in the summer, there were rumblings of the Sixers' ownership group interviewing candidates for the open GM position, and that continued this week with Utah Jazz assistant GM Justin Zanik and Houston Rockets vice president Gersson Rosas coming in for a second round of interviews.

Players

On draft night, the Sixers sent the No. 10 pick, Mikal Bridges, to the Phoenix Suns for 16th overall pick, Zhaire Smith, and an unprotected 2021 first-round pick from from Miami. The Sixers finished the night by taking Landry Shamet with the 26th pick and Shake Milton at the 54th spot.

Milton and Demetrius Jackson signed two-way contracts with the Sixers.

JJ Redick and Amir Johnson were re-signed to one-year contracts.

The Sixers acquired Wilson Chandler from Denver along with a 2021 second-round pick and rights to swap second round picks in 2022.

In a three-team trade, the Sixers picked up Mike Muscala from the Hawks, sending Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to Oklahoma City and Justin Anderson to Atlanta.

Richaun Holmes was shipped to Phoenix for cash considerations, and the Sixers signed international prospect Jonah Bolden.

Ersan Ilyasova left Philadelphia to sign with Milwaukee, and Marco Belinelli returned to San Antonio.

The Sixers added Norvel Pelle and Anthony Brown to their training-camp roster.

Coming up

The Sixers will begin training camp Saturday. Camp will run through next Tuesday and conclude with the Blue vs. White scrimmage at the Palestra at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
