U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies suffered several broken bones and a lacerated bladder in an auto accident yesterday in Arlington, Va., in which another passenger was killed.

Davies, 23, underwent several hours of surgery at the Washington Hospital Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The injuries make it unlikely Davis will play in next year's World Cup.

The tibia and femur in Davies' right leg were broken. He also has facial fractures and a fracture in his left elbow.

Davies will be hospitalized for at least a week, and additional surgery will be required to stabilize the broken elbow and possibly the facial fractures, said Dan Kalbac, a team doctor who collaborated with doctors at the hospital.

A U.S. Park Police spokesman said the accident took place about 3:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The fatality was identified as Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md.

Roberta and Davies were passengers, said the spokesman, who did not identify the driver. The cause of the accident remained under investigation.

COLLEGES: Former men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie and the University of Kentucky settled their cases over his firing, with Gillispie to receive nearly $3 million, the school said.

Gillispie, who was dismissed earlier this year, sued for breach of contract and fraud in May, seeking at least $6 million. The university countersued.

Golden State star Stephen Jackson asked to relinquish his captain's title during a meeting with Warriors coach Don Nelson and general manager Larry Riley. Nelson agreed to the request.

Former St. Joseph's star Delonte West practiced for the first time since he unexpectedly missed the team's first exhibition game on Oct. 6. There is no timetable for his return to game action. West has been treated in the past for bipolar disorder. He was arrested in Maryland last month on misdemeanor weapons possession charges.

Elsewhere: The Los Angeles Clippers exercised their third-year contract option on guard Eric Gordon and the fourth-year option on forward Al Thornton. . . . The San Antonio Spurs waived forward Dwayne Jones in their first cut of training camp. The 6-foot-11 center was a teammate of West's at St. Joseph's.
