A day after suffering a knee injury that forced him to leave the game on a stretcher, Sebastien Le Toux and the Union weren't ready to officially declare him out for Saturday's game against in Los Angeles against the Galaxy.
Le Toux suffered the injury in the 81st minute of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the host New York Red Bulls in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
He was taken down by defender Andrew Boyens, who received a yellow card for a hard tackle.
"It's not as bad as we originally thought," Union assistant coach John Hackworth said.
"He hasn't been ruled out," he said. "We don't want to put him in a position of playing then jeopardize the rest of the season, and we have to take that into account."
Still, it would be surprising if Le Toux were able to play on Saturday.
Wearing a brace in his left knee, Le Toux went though a workout on Wednesday, mostly on a bike. While he had yet to have an MRI when he talked to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Le Toux said he would like to play Saturday but he also realizes the importance of using common sense.
"The doctors told me I was very lucky, and it's not like it's four to five months of not playing. But it's something I have to take care of and not rush too quickly and get another injury," Le Toux said.
According to Le Toux, he harbored no resentment toward Boyens. On Wednesday, Le Toux said he received a text message from Boyens.
"He texted me to apologize, and I know he didn't want to do anything bad," Le Toux said. "It was part of the game."
Le Toux scored the Union's lone goal in the 68th minute.
In the four Major League Soccer games for the 1-3 Union, Le Toux has four of the team's five goals. Counting Tuesday's non-MLS game, he has five of the team's six goals.
Hackworth wouldn't say who would replace Le Toux if he couldn't go. The Union's other starting forward is Alejandro Moreno.
