Califf, Fred top-paid Union players, according to salary figures

The total payroll for Union players in its inaugural season is $2,394,192, according to salary figures released yesterday by the Major League Soccer Players Union.

The total payroll for Union players in its inaugural season is $2,394,192, according to salary figures released yesterday by the Major League Soccer Players Union.

Defender Danny Califf and midfielder Fred are the highest-paid Union players with a base salary of $250,000. Fred also makes an additional $32,000 in guaranteed compensation.

Defender Michael Orozco, on loan from San Luis FC of the Mexican First Division, makes $150,000 in base pay and another $50,000 in guaranteed compensation.

Shavar Thomas, who has yet to play this season, and forward Alejandro Moreno each make $145,000 in base pay.

Midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi makes $125,000 in base pay, forward Sebastian LeToux is at $110,000 and goaltender Chris Seitz makes $100,000.

The only other Union player listed in six figures in base pay is rookie Danny Mwanga, the No. 1 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft this spring, at $100,000. Mwanga, a Generation adidas player, receives total compensation of $206,250. The team's other first-round picks also are Generation adidas players. Midfielder Amobi Okugo makes $75,000 in base pay and $158,000 total, and Jack McInerney makes $52,250 in base pay and a guaranteed $116,416.

David Beckham is still the highest-paid player in MLS at $6.5 million in guaranteed compensation. Beckham hasn't played this season for the Los Angeles Galaxy because of a torn Achilles' tendon.

Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan is second at $2.13 million, followed by New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel at $1.92 million, Toronto midfielder Julian de Guzman at $1.72 million and Seattle midfielder Freddie Lungberg at $1.31 million.
