DiMartino, Independence seeking first win

In her first two games she has scored two goals, but Independence midfielder Christina DiMartino would gladly trade them for three points.

In her first two games she has scored two goals, but Independence midfielder Christina DiMartino would gladly trade them for three points.

DiMartino and the Independence (0-1-1) will look for their first win of the Women's Professional Soccer season when they meet the Boston Breakers (2-2) in Sunday's 6 p.m. home opener at Widener University. Boston is led by former Philadelphia Charge midfielder/forward Kelly Smith, who has one goal and a league-leading three assists.

The scheduled Independence home opener on April 16 against magicJack was postponed by lightning. The Independence are coming off Sunday's 2-1 loss to magicJack in Florida. On April 10, the Independence opened the season with a 2-2 draw against host Sky Blue.

DiMartino, who joined the Independence in June after St. Louis Athletica folded, has scored in each game.

"I am more confident in how I am playing, and the girls have helped me so much," DiMartino said. "It's nice to score, as long as I am playing well and contributing to the team."

DiMartino said that playing at a new home venue after competing at West Chester University during last year's inaugural season is a big deal.

"The field is gorgeous - big and spacious - and we hope to get the fans to come to our new location," she said. "Everybody is excited about playing here."

Actually, with only two games played and 16 more to go, DiMartino is excited just to get in a regular groove.

"We are looking forward to now playing more games," DiMartino said. "And of course, we're really anxious to get that first 'W.' "
