ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Independence traveled to Sahlen Stadium for the first time this season Sunday and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Western New York Flash.
It was the first loss for the Women's Professional Soccer-leading Flash (6-1-2) and lifted the Independence's record to 3-2-3. Neither team gained an advantage until Independence forward Danesha Adams put the ball in the net in the 90th minute on a pass from Lianne Sanderson.
Before the game, Independence coach Paul Riley said the match with the Marta-led team was a "huge game that could change the WPS season.
"We must win to keep some type of pressure on Western New York," he said. "They have been the class of the league so far, but now the World Cup is upon us and we will see who has the most depth in their squads."
