Mondragon is Union's lone All-Star

Despite a collective effort that has put the Union atop MLS' Eastern Conference, goalkeeper and captain Faryd Mondragon will be the only player representing the club in the All-Star Game.

Despite a collective effort that has put the Union atop MLS' Eastern Conference, goalkeeper and captain Faryd Mondragon will be the only player representing the club in the All-Star Game.

Mondragon was among 22 players selected to compete against English power Manchester United at Red Bull Arena on July 27. He was selected by New York coach Hans Backe, who will coach the All-Stars against Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils.

Mondragon, acquired from FC Cologne in the offseason, has been a considerable upgrade for the Union, holding a 0.84 goals-against average and seven shutouts in 19 matches.

While Union defenders Carlos Valdes and Sheanon Williams led fan text and online voting, they did not earn a roster spot; neither did Danny Califf and midfielder Justin Mapp, also on the ballot.

The All-Star Game will air live on ESPN2, Galavision and TSN at 8:30 p.m.

Here is the roster:

Goalkeepers: Tally Hall (Houston), Faryd Mondragon (Union)

Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston), Matt Besler (Kansas City), Geoff Cameron (Houston), Bobby Convey (San Jose), Sean Franklin (Los Angeles), Jamison Olave (Real Salt Lake), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York).

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), David Beckham (LA), Brad Davis (Houston), Jack Jewsbury (Portland), Shalrie Joseph (New England), Nick LaBrocca (Chivas)

Forwards: Juan Agudelo (New York), Omar Bravo (Kansas City), Omar Cummings (Colorado), Landon Donovan (LA), Thierry Henry (New York), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose)

Inactives: Kasey Keller (Seattle), Omar Gonzalez (LA), Rafa Marquez (New York), Brek Shea (Dallas) (Note: Another six inactives will be chosen by players.)

Twins to try tennis

Union twins Gabriel and Michael Farfan will team up tonight with top men's doubles pair Bob and Mike Bryan, current Wimbledon champs, when the Freedoms host the Kansas City Explorers. They are scheduled to play about 7:45 p.m. during a break in regular play. *
