Sports in Brief: Morgan is U.S. women's soccer player of the year

Forward Alex Morgan won the U.S. Soccer Federation's female athlete of the year award, in voting weighted equally between fans on Facebook, and representatives from U.S. Soccer and the national media.

Morgan led Team USA this year with 28 goals.

A Dutch linesman officiating in his son's youth-league game died after being beaten and kicked by several players from the opposing team after the game on Sunday. Three players aged from 15 to 16 were arrested for alleged involvement in the attack on Richard Nieuwenhuizen in the town of Almere, Netherlands.

Newcastle United grabbed its first English Premier League win in six matches, getting two goals from Demba Ba and another from Gael Bigirimana to beat visiting Wigan, 3-0.

Real Salt Lake traded top veterans Fabían Espíndola and Jámison Olave to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for an undisclosed amount of allocation money.

OLYMPICS: Utah officials plan to make a bid to hold the 2026 Winter Olympics.

TENNIS: Juan Ignacio Chela is retiring from professional tennis, leaving with six ATP singles titles and three in doubles - all on clay.

CYCLING: Greg LeMond said the president of the International Cycling Union can't remain in his job while a panel examines possible links between the organization and the doping case involving Lance Armstrong. The three-time Tour de France winner said he would be willing to run cycling in the interim.

BOBSLED: Lolo Jones survived her first bobsled crash. The Olympic hurdler and first-year bobsled push athlete was in a sled that tipped over during a training run for this weekend's World Cup stop in Winterberg, Germany. Jones and driver Elana Meyers were not hurt.
