Lansdowne Symphony

Less famous than the neighboring Philadelphia Orchestra, the Lansdowne Symphony in Delaware County has endured for decades amid a paltry budget, multiple conductors and a widespread notion that, perhaps, classical music isn't as popular as it once was. This group of about 80 musicians is comprised of doctors, lawyers, teachers, and car mechanics who escape their jobs every Tuesday night to rehearse. And they're really good. Started in Lansdowne 70 years ago this month, the symphony has swelled beyond its Delco roots: Its conductor commutes from New York City every week, and dozens of musicians travel across the region to play. Even so, it's stayed committed to Lansdowne and the gritty Upper Darby community.
