Undercover Ben

The iconic 20-foot-high statue of Benjamin Franklin at the Franklin Institute was wrapped Tuesday, August 20, 2013 in a special protective polyethylene cover to shield it from dust and debris for Wednesday, when workers are scheduled to break through a marble wall to create an entrance to the "Your Brain" exhibit in the new Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pavilion.

The Franklin statue is the centerpiece of the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial. Sculpted by James Earle Fraser, the statue weighs 30 tons and sits on a 92-ton pedestal of white Seravezza marble. Originally opened in 1938, the rotunda was designed by architect John T. Windrim and modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. TOM GRALISH / Staff Photographer
