Wilson Bentley: The Man Who Studied Snowflakes

Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, a self-educated Vermont farmer and photographer born in 1865, captured more than 5,000 images of snowflakes. Bentley would work outside in the storm, catch the falling flakes, put them on a black background, place them under his lens and record the image. He donated 500 of his photographs to the Smithsonian Institution. His original equipment is on display at the Old Red Mill in his hometown of Jericho, Vt. He died in 1931 at age 66.
