East Norriton’s longtime top executive will be Montgomery County’s next controller.

The Pennsylvania Senate voted unanimously Tuesday to confirm East Norriton Township Manager Bob Hart to the Montgomery County watchdog position, where he will serve until 2028.

County controllers are responsible for overseeing the finances of Pennsylvania counties and conducting internal audits of departments and offices.

“What they do really has effects on the residents of the taxpayer and the county,” Hart said. “Efficiencies make it better, can help relieve some of the stresses and budgetary burdens and challenges that come up.”

Hart’s predecessor, Karen Sanchez, resigned late last year to become Abington Township’s tax collector. She was first elected to the role in 2015 and won reelection twice. Hart will fill the role until a successor is elected in 2027.

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced last month he had chosen Hart for the role. His selection was sent to the Senate for confirmation alongside a slate of appointments for row offices and judgeships across the state.

Hart told The Inquirer on Monday that he planned to resign from his position in East Norriton to take the controller job if the Senate confirmed him.

Hart said he admired much of Sanchez’s work and looked forward to building relationships across the county once he took office.
