On the market: A four-bedroom Cape Cod in Chestnut Hill for $734,900
The owners particularly liked the quiet “Top of the Hill” neighborhood and the chance to create a professionally landscaped plot.
Flora and Larry Morgan were living in a townhouse in East Mount Airy while they raised their three children and an adopted nephew.
It was affordable while they paid for the children’s education, but it wasn’t their dream.
“I always wanted a single house,” says Flora, a retired nurse. “We couldn’t afford it.”
But in 1992, as empty nesters, they finally could, and they bought a four-bedroom brick Cape Cod in Chestnut Hill.
Neither has Philadelphia-area roots — Flora is from Ghana and Larry, a retired community college statistics professor, is from St. Louis. It was the good local job market that drew them.
This, however, was perfect for them. Flora particularly liked the quiet “Top of the Hill” neighborhood and the chance to create a professionally landscaped plot.
“We drove by and she just loved the atmosphere of the area,” Larry says.
Now, however, they are moving on to spend their retirement in Washington state to be close to a daughter.
The house, which has a two-car garage and five-car driveway, is freshly painted inside and out.
It has a covered rear porch/patio, an open front porch, two brick paver patios, bluestone walkways, and a walkout basement.
The primary and secondary bedrooms and a full bath are on the second floor. There are oak hardwood floors throughout.
The kitchen, which opens to the dining room, has a soapstone countertop, reclaimed wood island, and stainless-steel LG appliance suite with five-burner gas range.
The basement has its own exterior entrance and is suitable for an au pair suite, home office or business, in-law suite, or gym.
The house has high efficiency forced hot air heat and central air, and air humidifier HVAC systems.
It is two blocks from the Chestnut Hill East station and three from the Chestnut Hill West on SEPTA’s regional rail for easy access to Center City.
It is listed by Tim Owen of Compass Pennsylvania for $734,900.
