The five-bedroom, three-bath masonry twin in Germantown has played a major role for Evangaline Brown in two stages of her life.

Her family bought the house in 1964, and she was raised there. She left, got married, and returned 16 years later to live with her mother.

And now, nine years after her mother died, she and husband, Raymond, will be looking for an over-55 community for their next step. Both are retired — Evangaline from jobs in accounting, Raymond from Acme Markets.

Not that there aren’t regrets. “I call it ‘the castle,’” says Raymond, who has spent love and energy researching the 2,111-square-foot house, which he says was built between 1898 and 1902.

Just one example: He says many houses in the neighborhood used liberal quantities of wood from chestnut trees that had to be cut down due to blight.

The houses on the tree-lined brick street “are all different, all uniquely designed,” says Evangaline.

Entry on the first floor is through the front porch into the living room, then the dining room and the kitchen.

There is an added 200-square-foot space with a full laundry and full bath.

The second floor has three spacious bedrooms and a full bath.

The third level has a two-bedroom apartment with separate entrance and cooking area, and a full bath with stall shower and tub.

The full basement has the heating system and hot water heater and storage space.

The outdoor space has a rear deck, a storage shed, and a fenced back yard.

The house is listed by Vendela Bonner of RE/MAX Affiliates for $464,999.
