Sixers get an up-close look at a confident Ignas Brazdeikis of Michigan

After one season at Michigan, the 6-foot-7 Brazdeikis thinks he is ready for the NBA and would be a great fit for the Sixers.

Ignas Brazdeikis doesn’t lack confidence in his ability, which is why he felt one year at Michigan was enough for him before taking his chances on earning a spot in the NBA.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound swingman from the University of Michigan was among six players who participated Tuesday in a predraft workout for the 76ers. The others were Memphis senior guard Jeremiah Martin, College of Charleston senior forward Jarrell Brantley, Nevada senior swingman Caleb Martin, Washington sophomore guard Jaylen Nowell, and Marcel Ponitka, a 21-year-old guard from the Arka Gdynia team in Poland.

The Sixers have the 24th selection in the first round and picks 33, 34, 42 and 54 in the second round of the June 20 NBA draft.

Brazdeikis, 20, averaged 14.8 points in his one college season, and became the first Wolverines freshman to lead the team in scoring since Trey Burke in 2011-12. Brazdeikis has been listed as a potential second-round pick in some mock drafts.

“We will see on draft night,” he said after Tuesday’s workout. “I think I am helping myself with these workouts.”

He has certainly had plenty of workouts to showcase his skills. Tuesday was his 10th predraft workout, and he said he has a few more.

“I am showing a lot of different skills that I didn’t get to show in college,” he said.

Such as?

“At Michigan, I didn’t get to show too much of my perimeter skills, and I have a lot to show with that,” he said.

He did attempt 143 three-point field goals, making 39.2 percent, so NBA scouts did get to see him on the perimeter. They also got to see somebody who plays with plenty of enthusiasm.

“He is just a winner,” said Vince Rozman, the Sixers’ senior director of scouting. “He is extremely aggressive.”

Rozman then detailed what he likes about Brazdeikis’s game.

“He fits in the modern basketball with his position and skill set,” Rozman said. “He can stretch the floor, he can get to the basket, he is extremely tough, and he will play defense. You are just kind of drawn to his aggressiveness first and foremost.”

Born in Lithuania, Brazdeikis was a high school star in Ontario. As he enrolled at Michigan, Brazdeikis already had an eye toward the NBA.

“My intent was always to stay in the draft after my freshman year,” he said. “I felt I was ready for this moment and felt like I had the skills, the body and the mentality to do it. And then once [coach John] Beilein left, it kind of made my decision easy to leave.”

Beilein was the Michigan coach for 12 seasons before being hired in mid-May as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brazdeikis said Beilein was the best coach he has played for and thinks the veteran coach prepared him well for the NBA.

And while there will be plenty of players ranked ahead of him, Brazdeikis won’t take a backseat to anybody when it comes to confidence. Naturally, he feels he would do well as a Sixer.

“I think I fit in great, honestly,” he said. “I like playing up-tempo basketball, tough, competitive, you know, don’t back down from no one. I definitely see that with the Sixers. They have been doing that for a very long time, and I fit that mold and mentality.”
