Soccer on TV: Javier Hernández is on fire to start the MLS season

The Mexican superstar striker has five goals in two games for the Los Angeles Galaxy, who visit the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night. Plus the NWSL Challenge Cup and title races in France and Spain.

Javier Hernández scored two goals against Inter Miami, then a hat trick against the New York Red Bulls.

Werder Bremen vs. RB Leipzig

Friday, 2:30 p.m. (ESPNews, ESPN Deportes)

This German Cup semifinal is a matchup of major U.S. men’s national team players, Bremen striker Josh Sargent and Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams. It’s also the beginning of Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann’s swan song as he prepares to move to Bayern Munich this summer.

Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Princeton alum Jesse Marsch, now at sister club Red Bull Salzburg (where he manages Brenden Aaronson). Marsch will become the second American manager in the Bundesliga and will reunite with Adams, whom he coached with the New York Red Bulls from 2016-18.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Lens

Saturday, 11 a.m. (beIN Sports Connect)

The French Ligue 1 title race is a three-horse contest with four games to go: Lille on 73 points, Paris Saint-Germain on 72 and Monaco on 71. (Plus Lyon on 67, though they’d need a miracle to overtake the top three.) This will be a tricky game for PSG: it’s between Champions League games against Manchester City, and Lens has jumped up to fifth in the standings. That’s great for a traditional French power that spent the last five years in Ligue 2 and hasn’t been in Europe since 2007.

North Carolina Courage vs. Orlando Pride

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. (CBS Sports Network)

The final weekend of the NWSL Challenge Cup’s group stage has a few games with stakes for the final. This is one of them, and it could be a game full of fireworks. North Carolina’s Debinha, Jessica McDonald and Lynn Williams spearhead an attack that has scored a tournament-best nine goals, but the defense has allowed a tournament-worst eight.

That defense will face Orlando stars Alex Morgan, Marta and Sydney Leroux this weekend. If the Courage are to win the group, they’ll have to keep the score down - and if the Pride are to win it, they’ll have to score a lot for the goal difference tiebreaker.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool

Sunday, 11:30 a.m. (NBCSN, Telemundo)

United comes roaring into the latest edition of English soccer’s signature rivalry, having just hammered Roma 6-2 in the Europa League on Thursday. Its fans will also come roaring up to the gates of Old Trafford to protest the club’s involvement in the Super League, and don’t be surprised if a few Liverpool fans join in.

But you might not see much about the protest on social media, and for good reason. Sports teams and some broadcasters across the United Kingdom are uniting this weekend for a social media blackout to protest Facebook (which also owns Instagram), Twitter and more platforms’ lack of action against racism, sexism and other forms of online abuse.

Gotham FC vs. Racing Louisville

Sunday, 12:30 p.m. (Paramount+)

A Gotham win would clinch first place in the NWSL Challenge Cup’s eastern division. A tie would do so too if North Carolina doesn’t win Saturday. Louisville will be out to play spoiler after coming close to a win in all three games so far, but not quite getting over the hump.

Racing manager Christy Holly might have some extra motivation since he was fired by the team formerly known as Sky Blue FC after two years in charge there, and five total with the organization.

Nashville SC vs. Inter Miami

Sunday, 1 p.m. (ESPN, ESPN Deportes)

The sting of the Union’s home loss to Miami last weekend turned a lot less sharp when the news broke Tuesday that Gonzalo and Federico Higuaín’s mother, Nancy Zacarias, died of cancer. Her sons’ last game before her passing was the one in Chester in which they became the first set of brothers ever to score in the same MLS game. They will understandably miss this game to be at home in Argentina with the family.

Valencia vs. Barcelona

Sunday, 3 p.m. (beIN Sports, beIN Sports Español)

Barcelona threw away three points Thursday in a bad 2-1 home loss to Granada. That makes this road trip a must-win with five games to go, and Barcelona in third place in La Liga. Atlético Madrid is in first with 73 points, Real and Barcelona each have 71, and Sevilla has 70.

By the way, there might be an American on each side of this game if Valencia’s Yunus Musah plays against Barcelona’s Sergiño Dest.

Houston Dash vs. Portland Thorns

Sunday, 7:30 p.m. (Paramount+)

Portland has already won the Challenge Cup’s western division, and goes for a perfect group stage record against last year’s Challenge Cup winner. Then we’ll wait to find out where the Challenge Cup final will be played, as the league hadn’t announced it yet going into the weekend.

Seattle Sounders vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

Sunday, 9 p.m. (FS1, Fox Deportes)

Thanks to Javier Hernández’s five goals so far, the Galaxy are the only team in MLS to start the season with two wins in two games. He’ll look to continue his hot streak while visiting Raúl Ruidíaz and the Sounders in a game that’s always one to circle on the calendar.
