HARRISON, N.J. — Dylan Nealis scored his first career MLS goal on Saturday night to help the New York Red Bulls beat the Union, 1-0, and snap their five-game unbeaten streak.

Union goalkeeper Andre Blake had a save before the 34-year-old left the game with an apparent hamstring injury in the 28th minute and was replaced by 19-year-old Andrew Rick.

Nealis opened the scoring in the 74th minute. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, on the left side, cut inside to evade a defender and played a low cross to Nealis for a first-touch finish that ricocheted off the post into the net.

Bradley Carnell on how Andre Blake's injury affected his substitution plans: "Big. Yep, the minute it happened, I was like, 'That screwed us a little bit.'" But he adds there were plenty of opportunities to score anyway. "We could have, would have, should have, and we would never have known."

Carlos Miguel Coronel had a save for the Red Bulls (11-10-6).

Despite the loss Union (15-6-6, 51 points) still led the race for the Supporters’ Shield, which goes to the MLS team with the best regular-season record. They won it back in 2020 for their only trophy in the club’s 16-season history. Cincinnati, which played Portland later Saturday, and San Diego FC, which leads the Western Conference and plays Sunday against San Jose, have 49 points,

New York’s Kyle Duncan (red card, violent conduct) and the Union’s Jakob Glesnes (yellow card accumulation) served one-game suspensions.

The Union beat the Red Bulls, 3-2, in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday at Subaru Park and 2-0 at home in MLS action on July 12.
