Kentucky Derby picks, odds, TV, and trivia

Kendrick Carmouche, a jockey with ties to Parx in Bensalem, is looking to make some history aboard No. 20 Bourbonic. The opening favorite is the No. 14 Essential Quality.

Essential Quality, with Louis Saez up, celebrates winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile in November. Saez is hoping for a better result at this year's Kentucky Derby than he had in 2019 when he was aboard Maximum Security, which was disqualified for interference. It was the first time in Derby history the winner was DQ'd.

Todd Pletcher’s batting average at the Kentucky Derby reminds you of a Phillies center fielder. But, with two wins in 55 starts, the legendary trainer is not slowing down. He has four more contenders running Saturday as he looks for winner No. 3.

One of his entries is the No. 20 Bourbonic, a terrific name that Merriam-Webster ought to include in its dictionary as an adjective. Kendrick Carmouche, who has extensive experience at Parx, is aboard Bourbonic. He’s a long shot, opening at 30-1, from a position that has won once (Big Brown, 2008) in 17 Derbies.

Here’s a closer look at Saturday’s 147th running of the crown jewel of horse racing. Good to have it back on the first Saturday in May.

The weather

The temperature will be in the 60s around post time with a 20% chance of precipitation, according to Weather.com.

Horsing around

  1. “I think it’ll be a good spot,” trainer Brad Cox said of favorite Essential Quality’s No. 14 post. “He’s got good tactical speed that he’ll be able to get into a good position from there.”

  2. It’s been 60 years since a No. 14 has won the Derby (Carry Back, 1961), the second-longest drought for a post position. A No. 17 has never won, which could be trouble for Highly Motivated.

  3. Cox grew up near Churchill Downs and will try to become the first Louisville native to train the winner. That’s hard to believe.

  4. This will be the first Derby to have a 20-stall starting gate. Previously, a 14-stall gate was used with an auxiliary gate for the other six horses. This created a gap between the Nos. 14 and 15 horses.

  5. “With the new gate,” said Todd Pletcher, trainer of the No. 20 Bourbonic, “we’re hopeful that things will be better than they were in the past and the post won’t be that bad.”

  6. Around 45,000 fans are expected to be permitted to attend because of the pandemic, less than 100,000 of what it normally would be on Derby Day. Economic impact for the Louisville area is estimated at $34.6 million, a far cry from the usual $400 million Derby weekend haul.

  7. Vicki Oliver, who trains No. 13 Hidden Stash, is the 18th woman to try to win horse racing’s most prestigious race. Shelley Riley had the best finish for a woman trainer when Casual Lies ran second to Lil E Tee in 1992. The first female trainer was Mary Hirsch in 1937 with the appropriately named No Sir, which ran 13th.

  8. Part of the ownership group for Hot Rod Charlie are five guys who played football at Brown. This is their first Derby, and their nickname for their thoroughbred is Chuck.

  9. Track announcer Travis Stone, observing the easygoing personality of the No. 12 Helium, said: “He only gets worked up when it’s time to eat. And he never misses a meal.” Same can be said for The Inquirer sports staff.

  10. This will be the first Derby to prohibit the use of Lasix, a diuretic used to prevent bleeding in horses.

  11. Bourbonic’s dam is Dancing Afleet by 2005 Preakness winner Afleet Alex, whose owners partnered for Alex’s Lemonade Stand in 2005. A wing at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is named for Alex Scott, who created the lemonade stand in 2000 to raise funds for pediatric cancer.

  12. Kendrick Carmouche, Bourbonic’s jockey who has ridden for years at Parx, will try to become the first Black jockey to win the Derby since Jimmy Winkfield in 1902. That was in the era when jockeys of color ruled the sport.

Purse

Total: $3,000,000. First place: $1,860,000. Second place: $600,000. Third place: $300,000. Fourth place: $150,000. Fifth place: $90,000.

The standings

Horses accumulated points for finishing in the top four of the 35 prep races held around the world. The top 20 horses were then eligible for the Kentucky Derby. Here is the standings of those running on Saturday. The number in parentheses is their post position:
