The best — and worst — looks from the PGA Championship, from WAGS inspiration to New York jerseys

We caught up with some members of the Aronimink gallery to find out what inspired their fashion choices.

When it comes to men’s golf fashion, there are a few staples everyone should have in their closet: polo shirts, quarter zips, a pair of comfy pants and shorts, and maybe a hat to match.

And that doesn’t just go for the athletes on the course, it goes for the spectators as well. Golf is the only sport where fans show up ready to sub in for their favorite players, wearing the same exact attire as the golfers competing for the week.

But, when it comes to women’s wardrobe, there tends to be more creativity in the outfit building process — blending a mix of country club attire with everyday comfort as they walk 18 holes to take in all the action.

“Golf fashion, at least for spectators, most importantly, I need to be comfortable,” said Old City native Lily Smith. “I’m going to be here all day and then later this weekend. So, first and foremost comfort. And then after that, I’m really just trying not to sweat for most of the day.”

Looking around Aronimink Golf Club throughout the week, it was easy to spot the fans who built out a Pinterest board for outfits ahead of the event. And most of them got their inspiration from the WAGS of the sport.

Here are some of the best fits we spotted at the PGA Championship …

WAGS inspiration

One of the top looks from the week came from Ambler native Rachel Romeo. The 20-year-old is just returning from college so she put together the look last minute. After donating most of her clothes from school, she decided to rummage through her mom’s closet to find more pieces to complete the fit.

“I bought this dress a while ago when I was planning to go to France,” Romeo said. “And I think it’s just a great dress to wear to anything that’s kind of semi-formal but not too formal, but you want to look kind of classy. That’s why I threw this dress on. This sweater is my mom’s. I like how the yellow pairs with the pink and the red. And then these are my mom’s sneakers. Honestly, I live through my mom’s closet half the time.”

Romeo’s inspiration behind the look came from Scottie Scheffler’s wife, Meredith.

“I look a lot at Scottie Scheffler’s wife, where she has amazing golf course fashion,” Romeo said. “And even my boyfriend this morning was like ‘Wow, you look like Scottie Scheffler’s wife,’ because I talk about her fashion all the time and I love it. So, that’s kind of my inspiration for my golf course fashion.”

Old City native Lily Smith also used some of the golf WAGS as inspiration heading into the PGA Championship, wearing a FARM Rio sundress decorated with floral prints with a yellow cardigan to match, and Chanel ballet flats and a BOYY bag to accessorize.

“The inspiration was light and springy,” Smith said. “We had the Masters right before this. So, I got to see all the WAGS try that one out first. And obviously, the stakes are a little bit lower. But, they were easy to follow.”

When she attends on Saturday, she’ll be wearing a crisp white dress with another sweater and a smaller bag. She’ll also be dressing her dad in a linen suit to match.

Amazon comes up clutch

25-year-old Lancaster native Emmaline Milosek has never been around the golf environment before. But when her dad got free tickets to the PGA Championship, she decided to tag along. Of course, this meant she needed some new additions to her wardrobe — and she needed them fast.

That’s where Amazon came in.

“So, really simple,” Milosek said. “Everything is Amazon. This was kind of last minute and I was like I need something that looks like I golf even though I don’t. So, Amazon helped me out. I just kind of wanted to look preppy. I’m from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, so I don’t really get to dress like this often. So, I wanted to fit in.”

Representing her community in style

For 26-year-old Philadelphia native Candice Nguyen, the PGA Championship was about more than just watching some of the top players on the golf course.

“I want to be here because this space doesn’t have people that typically look like me,” Ngyuen said. “So, I always want to show up for my community.”

And, of course, she was going to represent her community in style. Nguyen was at Aronimink Golf Club on both Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, she stocked up at the merch tent and on Thursday, she was able to show off a few of her purchases.

“I got this hat and this sweatshirt from the PGA Shop,” Nguyen said. “The skirt I had on my own, it’s just a pleated white skirt. And the shoes, I always like to wear frilly socks to make them a little more fun. And then the New Balances because we’re walking a lot.”

Who inspired the look?

“Honestly, my boyfriend wore this exact outfit,” Nguyen said. “But, I decided to make it look better.”

Matching attire

A lot of children wandered the course in matching golf attire, but one of the more eye-catching fits was the gear worn by Berwyn natives Christina Egonopoulous and her six-year-old daughter Alex, who skipped school to attend the PGA Tour event.

“We’re so happy that this is here,” Christina said. “And we skipped school today because we thought this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. And we like to dress cute and the men in our family like to golf.”

“And we like to golf,” Alex added.

Christina wore a matching pink and green quarter zip top from Addison Bay, a local designer, with a matching green skirt. Meanwhile, Alex wore an all-pink Aronimink Golf Club top and a green skirt from Target. She also had a pink bow in her hair and her matching jacket was on the table of the fan zone area.

The worst look from the week

And naturally, when you have a list of the best looks from the week, you also have to have a list of the worst — but we’re just going to keep it to one.

Virginia native Matt Cocorikis showed up to the course wearing a Patrick Ewing New York Knicks jersey shortly after the Sixers suffered a series sweep to the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs.

“In the City of Brotherly Love, you got to show them who’s daddy sometimes,” Cocorikis said. “A little 4-0 series sweep, belt to [expletive]. I just had to. Too easy.”

This had to be one of the worst fashion choices we saw from the event.

Sorry, nothing personal.
