Tiger Woods misses PGA Championship cut despite support from a large crowd at Bethpage Black

Woods managed to hit only three fairways and nine greens, and hurt himself with four bogeys in a five-hole stretch on the back nine. He wound up shooting a 73 and missing the 36-hole cut by one stroke.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The crowd following Tiger Woods at Bethpage Black on Friday was large and loud and doing anything it could to will Woods’ drives into the fairway, or his putts into the cup.

However, Woods just didn’t have enough in the second round of the PGA Championship. The Masters champion hit only three of 14 fairways and nine greens and still shot a 3-over-par 73, but that was one shot over the cut figure of 4-over 144 and meant he did not qualify for the weekend.

Woods, 43, had not played since his historic win at the Masters on April 14. He came to Bethpage Black the week before the tournament to prepare, but he only played nine holes during tournament week, and elected to rest rather than come to the course on Wednesday because he wasn’t feeling well.

“It’s just the way it goes,” he said. “You just don't feel well and just not able to do it. But resting would be better, so I would have energy to play. Unfortunately I just made too many mistakes and just didn't do the little things I need to do. I had a couple three-putts. I didn't hit wedges close. I didn't hit any fairways today. Did a lot of little things wrong.

“I just didn't play well. As I said, I didn't do all the little things I need to do correctly to post good scores and put myself in position to shoot good scores.”

Despite hitting one fairway on the front nine, Woods shot even-par 35, rolling in a 40-footer for birdie at No. 9. However, he couldn’t sustain the momentum, carding three consecutive bogeys after driving into the rough at 10 and 11 and 3-putting the 12th.

Woods answered a birdie at the par-5 13th with another 3-putt at 14, dropping him to 5-over. He parred in from there but he did not give himself any good birdie chances.

Woods said he “enjoyed being Masters champion again,” and said the PGA was a “quick turnaround.” He did not give any indication when he’ll be competing again.

“There's no reason why I can't get up to speed again and crank it back up,” he said. “I've got to start feeling a little bit better first before that happens. We'll do that first and then start cranking it back up again.

“I just wasn’t moving the way I needed to. That’s the way it goes. There’s going to be days and weeks where it’s just not going to work, and today was one of those days.”
