Broad Street Run

The annual 10-mile run down the city’s main drag brings out more hometown spirit than anything but a championship parade. Drinks, snacks, and entertainment await runners at the finish line, while spectators can enjoy the bands, cheerleaders, and drill teams that are encouraged to rally around the race route.

MONDAY

Whitman @ 200: Art and Democracy

This all-star gathering of poets, featuring Leonard Gontarek and poets from the Poetry in Common Workshop, is one of the highest-profile literary observances of the Walt Whitman bicentennial. Many events are still to come as Philadelphia and Camden fete Whitman in the weeks leading up to his 200th birthday on May 31.

Lil Pump

Miami rapper Lil Pump is taking the stage at the Met with Waynesboro rapper Lil Skies. Expect to hear a selection of Pump’s most popular tracks, including the 2017 runaway hit “Gucci Gang” that put him on the map.

Global Warming as an Opportunity

Penn State oceanography professor Raymond Najjar gives a “Town Square” talk at the Academy of Natural Sciences about possible solutions to global warming and how they might improve air quality, agricultural yields, human health, and other economic and ecological conditions.

THURSDAY

Civil War and Reconstruction: The Battle for Freedom and Equality

This new permanent exhibition will focus on the constitutional debates from the Civil War and Reconstruction with more than 100 artifacts, including original copies of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and Dred Scott’s signed petition for freedom. Also there: artifacts from the defunct Civil War Library and Museum of Philadelphia — unseen locally for many years.

Strand of Oaks

Mount Airy’s Timothy Showalter, who records as Strand of Oaks, might seem like he’s due for a break after following up 2017′s Hard Love with Harder Love last year. Instead, he’s back with another new album, Eraserland, recorded quickly in the fall with members of My Morning Jacket in Louisville, Ky.

May Fair at Clark Park

Head out to the West Philly park for a day of food, live music, and browsing local artisans’ wares. There will also be a petting zoo and plenty of games for the little ones.
