Gov. Josh Shapiro reacts after Cody Balmer pleads guilty to attempted murder, arson

Standing with his wife, Lori, by his side, Gov. Josh Shapiro decried Cody Balmer’s crimes. Balmer, the man accused of setting the governor’s mansion ablaze this spring, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and related crimes on Tuesday morning and was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison. Shapiro said he found it difficult to contemplate that — by Balmer’s own admission — what happened on that April night was attempted murder. “He tried to burn our family to death while we slept,” Shapiro said.
