American Water Works Co. Inc., Voorhees, has licensed its money-saving NPXpress wastewater-treatment technology to Abengoa, a $10.2 billion Spanish sustainable-technology company. It's the first time the Voorhees water utility has licensed an internally generated technology.

The NPXpress technology helps wastewater utilities to reduce costs while improving the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The technology operates at lower oxygen levels, so electricity consumption for aeration can be reduced by up to 50 percent. It also can reduce or eliminate the need for costly chemicals. NPXpress is patent-protected in 15 countries and the EU.

Abengoa says it plans to incorporate the technology into its next generation of water treatment systems.
