NEW YORK - A New York fashion photographer known for his 1970s nude images of then-10-year-old Brooke Shields has died in Manhattan. Garry Gross was 73.
His sister, Linda Gross, said yesterday that he died Nov. 30 from a heart attack at his home in Greenwich Village.
Though he earned his reputation as a celebrity image-maker, in the last few years of his life he had turned to dog portraiture. In 2002, he became certified as a dog trainer.
But it was the 1970s images of Shields that marked his career most significantly.
In 1975, Shields' mother consented to allow her daughter, then a child model, to be photographed nude. After Shields' acting career took off years later, she sued to stop Gross from selling the photos. Shields lost the case.
