Clarification

Local golfer clarifies how he was disqualified from U.S. Open qualifier at Waynesborough.

It was reported that Jim Smith Jr., the head pro at Philadelphia Cricket Club, was disqualified from Thursday's U.S. Open local qualifier at Paoli's Waynesborough Country Club because he had signed for the wrong score. That much is true. But he would have shot 74, not 75, which would have gotten him into an eight-man playoff to determine the last spot plus two alternates. A marker actually wrote down the wrong number (4 instead of 5) on the hole in question (No. 2). After rushing off the course, Smith realized the mistake and immediate called the people from the Golf Association of Philadelphia who were running the event, told them what had happened, and DQ'd himself.
