NFL offseason odds: Eagles are longshots for the Super Bowl, less so for the NFC Championship
If the Eagles decide to pursue a quarterback via trade or free agency, how much will their odds change?
It didn’t matter if you had someone to share Valentine’s Day with, it was a broken hearts club day for many. The NFL season ended and a new one doesn’t start for more than 200 days. Football is my favorite sport to bet on, my No. 1 love. Here are some ways I’m going to keep our long-term relationship strong until we meet again in Week 1 … or at least Week 2 of preseason.
Off and betting
Odds for the 2023 Super Bowl are already up at sports betting apps with the Bills, Chiefs and Rams as the favorites. AFC and NFC markets are also available.
At most sportsbooks, the Eagles are priced at +4000 to win the Super Bowl. But at FanDuel and BetRivers, the Birds are +3300. As always, it pays to shop around. For the NFC championship, the Eagles are mostly priced at +1700.

If the Eagles decide to pursue a quarterback via trade or free agency, how much will their odds change?
Betting on the NFL draft is not permitted in Pennsylvania, but it is offered at New Jersey sportsbooks. Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (+160) is favored to be the top pick, followed by Alabama tackle Evan Neal (+200) and Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux (+350).
As the April 28-30 draft gets closer, more props will be added, like how many trades will happen in the first round, Eagles first pick: offensive or defensive player, and over/under draft positions of certain players.
Hating on Tom Brady
Sure, the Eagles beat him in the Super Bowl, giving me and many others the epitome of pure joy. But he’s a cheater and I’m tired of his stupid, perfect face. Caesars Sportsbook has odds for next season’s NFL MVP and, of course, Brady is listed.
“If Brady doesn’t play, people would get their money back who bet on him,” said Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading at Caesars. “Obviously, people have changed their minds before about retirement, so it wouldn’t be the first time if Brady flipped. We made him 45-1 just to match his age; he’d be turning 45 in August just before next season starts.”
If you’re ready to turn the page on Brady, the 2022 NFL MVP favorites are Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers (+700). Russell Wilson is 30-1 and Jalen Hurts is 40-1.
USFL
The United States Football League, which has eight teams including the Philadelphia Stars, will hold a player selection meeting on Tuesday. The inaugural season is scheduled to start April 16. All of this year’s games will be playing in Birmingham, Ala.
Don’t let anyone tell you that football doesn’t rule in Philadelphia. When the “XFL 2.0″ returned, people at the BetRivers Sportsbook at Rivers Casino Philadelphia were asking for the games to be on, sportsbook manager Patrick Glose recalled.
“No matter who scored, no matter who people were betting on, people started cheering ‘XFL! XFL!’ It’s like they were trying to prop the league up,” he said. “The thirst for football is there.”
Before you start looking for USFL futures, pump the brakes. Teams haven’t even been formed and regulators still have to approve betting on the league.
How much will be wagered on the USFL? Glose said that the XFL did numbers similar to MLS.
“The MLS market is driven by the Philadelphia Union. I do think having a Philly team will have an impact.”
The Beard and Sixers odds
The Sixers saw their NBA championship odds go from +1200 to +700 at BetRivers after the James Harden trade. The Sixers have the fifth-best odds to win the NBA title and the third-best odds (+300) to win the Eastern Conference.
“The day Harden was traded we saw a betting spike by Sixers fans,” said Glose. “Of all futures bets for the Sixers to win the title, approximately half the wagers were made on or the day after the trade.”
Super action
Pennsylvania sports bettors placed a record amount of bets on Super Bowl 56. More than $68 million was wagered on the Super Bowl in the state, a 27% increase from last year. After payouts, revenue for the sportsbooks is expected to be $4.5 million.
How did some of our state’s sports betting brethren bet on the big game? DraftKings, the state’s No. 2 operator in terms of handle, shared state-specific insight.
Pennsylvania bettors backed the Bengals +4 at a 65% clip, including one bet for $200,000.
They also pounded the props, from popular ($15,000 on Cam Akers rushing yards) to obscure ($15,000 on longest punt.)
Closing line
Misinformation and memes impacted Super Bowl betting. The Simpsons have a penchant for predicting the future and many people fell for a Photoshopped meme with the Bengals winning the Super Bowl 34-31. BetMGM reported it was the most-bet correct score prop.
