In the NFL, it’s often better to hit rock bottom than continue in a slow, lingering decline. The 2026 Eagles haven’t quite hit their nadir this season, but falling to the equally woeful Washington Commanders, 27-10, on Sunday night suggests this season can head in only one direction.
Perhaps, unless Nick Sirianni can turn the tide. In question is if Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman even want him to sneak the 2-6 Eagles into the playoffs — playoffs? — or reach some level of respectability. That may sound cynical, but great empires have been built from ashes.
The answer could come in the next week ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Roseman can’t possibly deal away every candidate, but one or two significant moves — a month after center Cam Jurgens was sent to the Baltimore Ravens — will help the general manager in his quest to stockpile draft picks for the future.

Eagles injury report
The only big of good news out of Sunday night's loss is the Eagles didn't suffer any major new injuries.
Here's a rundown:
Michael Carter II, DB: Carter started after missing two games with an abdominal injury, but left in the third quarter with after reinjuring his abdomin and didn't return.
Saquon Barkley, RB: Barkley, who is dealing with hamstring and back injuries, was once again on a pitch count. He rushed 13 times for 30 yards and one touchdown.
Andrew Mukuba, S: Mukuba left the game in the first quarter after coming down hard on an interception attempt, but returned later in the quarter to force a fumble.
Moro Ojomo, DT: Ojomo left the game early after appearing to aggreviate his neck injury but quickly returned to the field.
Several Eagles players were inactive for the game: WR Devonta Smith (hamstring), WR Dontayvion Wicks (ankle), LB Jihaad Campbell (hamstring/quad), CB Jonathan Jones (hamstring), RG Jake Majors, WR Britain Covey (knee).
In his first season as an analyst on NBC’s Football Night in America, Mike Tomlin hasn’t held any punches.
Following the Cleveland Browns’ Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach quoted his former wideout, JuJu Smith-Schuster, saying, “the Browns is the Browns.” The comment got the attention of Cleveland coach Todd Monken, who said his team “took that to heart.” Then, in Week 3, Tomlin called the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to play man coverage late in the team’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens “somewhat negligent.”
Compared to other coaches-turned-analysts, Tomlin’s bluntness is different. Before Sunday night’s game kicked off, Tomlin offered a frank assessment of the Eagles’ attitude following the team’s 38-21 loss to the Cowboys last week.

Eagles face idle Giants Sunday in South Philly
The Eagles head back to Philly to face the New York Giants at home Sunday in Week 9 (1 p.m., Fox 29), but the Birds are carrying a lot of baggage.
Not only have the Eagles lost six straight games for the first time since 2012 (during Andy Reid's final season as head coach), they're 5-11 in their past 16 games dating back to last season.
Despite losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season to a left knee injury, the Giants rallied last week behind former Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy to defeat the Houston Texans in overtime in Week 7.

Fox cameras caught Jerry Jones cursing following Cowboys loss
The Eagles are currently unwatchable, but Jerry Jones fuming on camera never gets old.
The longtime Cowboys owner was caught by Fox cameras throwing out a few obscenities after Dallas blew a 10-point lead with less than four minutes remaining against ex-Birds quarterback Gardner Minshew and the Arizona Cardinals.
NBC analyst and former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had some choice words about the Cowboys after the loss, calling the team "a bunch of blinkers."

Saquon Barkley reacts to the report the Eagles won’t trade him
With the Nov. 10 trade deadline looming, Saquon Barkley made it clear that he doesn’t want to leave Philadelphia.
The 29-year-old running back has been the subject of trade speculation over the past week. The floundering Eagles have fallen further from playoff contention, which could lead Howie Roseman to part with players on expiring contracts and/or players on multi-year deals at the deadline in an effort to build anew for the future.
