Fans try to bring their own luck, Eagles show support — and chug beers — and more from Flyers’ Game 3 loss

Nick Sirianni, Cooper DeJean, Nolan Smith, and Moro Ojomo made appearances in Game 3, while 3.8 was the magic number — from food and beverage specials in the arena to embroidered merchandise.

At the sound of the buzzer, fans in waves of orange went silent at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. There was no celebration, no “Let’s go Flyers” chants, no jerseys hanging over the rafters of the second level of the main concourse. Instead, fans made their way onto the main concourse in silence.

Following the Flyers’ 4-1 loss on Thursday night, the Carolina Hurricanes have pushed the series to 3-0, with a chance to complete the sweep in Philly on Saturday.

Fans are feeling ’40-60′ about the series

In March, the Flyers had a 3.8% chance of making the 2026 NHL playoffs. On April 13, against the Hurricanes, the Flyers defied the odds and clinched their postseason spot with a 3-2 shootout win at home.

“I think everybody is really happy with how the team’s done so far,” said 65-year-old Berlin, N.J. native Todd Shannon. “Now, we’re kind of playing with house money. So, we really want to win. But, we’re really proud of how they played, getting into the playoffs, and especially kicking Pittsburgh’s butt.”

With the Flyers falling behind 3-0 in the series, fans are starting to lose faith in their team — including Shannon, who has been a season-ticket holder dating back to the 1980s.

“I want to say 40-60,” Shannon said. “Forty percent of me says Flyers win. Sixty percent says they lose. “[Rick] Tocchet was talking about digging out of the grave. They’ve done it so many times. I’m not going to underestimate them at all. So, I would not be surprised if they win the series. But, it would be a really pleasant surprise.”

A loss on Saturday in Game 4 will end the team’s hopes for a Stanley Cup title.

Fly, Eagles, Fly-ers

The last time the Flyers were at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, some Phillies players made the short trip from Citizens Bank Park, following a postponed game, to support their neighboring team in Game 6 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This time around, it was the Eagles who showed love, starting with head coach Nick Sirianni and defensive back Cooper DeJean. Instead of booing, like they did with the Phillies, the crowd rained down in “Coop” chants as Sirianni ignited the orange, DeJean chugged his beer, and Gritty looked on.

And they weren’t the only Eagles at Game 3. Nolan Smith and Moro Ojomo were also in attendance. When caught on the videoboard, Smith gave Philly fans a brief look back to the 2024 Super Bowl parade by chugging a beer and throwing the cup into the crowd.

Bringing their own luck into the arena

Whether it’s wearing the same pair of lucky socks or preparing the same breakfast every game day, there’s always superstitious fans to bring more luck to their favorite sports teams.

For New Jersey native Cindy Curtin, her good luck charm was a Mike Richards jersey that belongs to her son, Ian. For almost 20 years, that jersey brought luck to the Flyers. Every game Ian went to wearing the jersey, they would win. Curtin was hoping to bring that same luck to the arena on Thursday.

“It’s got to be a Mike Richards jersey,” Curtin said. “Every time my son wears this to the games, they win. So, he told me not to wear my jersey. I had to wear this one.”

A Flyers love story

Curtin wasn’t the only fan hoping to bring some more luck into the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Heather Shannon of Berlin wasn’t leaving the house without her Gritty bracelet and her husband’s Owen Tippett jersey. Unfortunately, the bad luck charm was her — according to her daughter.

“My daughter says I’m bad luck coming to the game,” Shannon, 65, said. “So, I don’t want to be. She wanted to be here instead of me. But, she’ll be here Saturday.”

Shannon has been going to games with her husband since they first started dating over 30 years ago.

“When we were dating, the rule was if you brought the same woman to three games in a row, you were getting married,” Shannon said. “He brought me to three games and all the guys were like ‘Oh, you’re stuck now. He’s done.’”

They’ve been attending Flyers home games ever since, including the game against the Hurricanes that clinched them a playoff appearance last month.

3.8, the theme of the night

Speaking of 3.8%, that was the theme of the night.

As part of the food and beverage specials at the arena, they offered the Category 3.8 cocktail — putting a twist on a Category 4 hurricane. The drink contained coconut rum, pineapple juice, blue raspberry syrup, and a rubber ducky garnish.

Pregame celebrations

A common number embroidered into Flyers merch ahead of the game was also 3.8, along with the phrase ‘Puck Everyone.’

Shannon Patterson, a 40-year-old Fairmount native, created her social media page, thatcraftyone, in 2020 — taking up embroidery as a new hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, she’s been making appearances at a number of retail activations, weddings, baby showers, and holiday parties.

But when the Flyers reached out to her to work Game 3, she was ecstatic.

“We’ve been watching the Flyers since we were little,” Patterson said. “My youngest sister was at the Stanley Cup Final game when she was like two weeks old. My parents brought a newborn baby to the Flyers.

“So, I was freaking out [when the Flyers reached out]. I was so excited. I immediately texted my husband, and I was like, can we do this? We’re going to do this. Because we’ve done the Phillies before and that was an amazing experience. Getting involved, from this angle, with Philly sports has been so rewarding for me.”

After purchasing Flyers merch, fans could get the piece embroidered by Patterson.
