It’s always a good idea to plan ahead for Thanksgiving, especially if a fresh turkey is part of the game plan.

Cooking with fresh birds has its advantages: The meat is less processed, lending a juicier, tender taste. Many butchers and markets in the Philadelphia region recommend preordering and picking up days before to ensure your turkey is ready for the holiday.

Thanksgiving begins a busy season for these local butchers, including favorite halal and kosher spots. Philly’s Muslim and Jewish communities head to the handful of butchers offering religiously permissible meats that follow specific dietary laws.

“The flow of business is very busy. There’s a lot of people that come in during this time of year,” said Laith Newton, co-owner of Prime Halal Meats. “That weekend before definitely till the day prior [to Thanksgiving] is just a lot of business — a lot of American Muslims and second-generation Muslims are happier to find strictly hand-slaughtered cuts.”

To help you get your Thanksgiving plans in order, we’ve compiled a list of butchers for fresh turkeys in Philly and beyond, including kosher and halal options.

Where to find halal turkeys?

Halal is the Arabic word for “permissible” used to describe various elements of Muslims’ lifestyle, including food. In reference to meat, the word certifies it follows the tradition of zabihah, defining whether the animal has been fed and treated humanely before and during hand slaughtering, blessed in the name of Allah, and drained of blood.

In 1975, Vietnam veteran Wali Scott opened the butcher shop on South 23rd Street to serve halal meat in Philly. His youngest son, Amr, has kept the legacy going since 2000, when he took over the shop. The shop run by Amr and Laith Newton sells a wide selection of beef, poultry, lamb, goat, seafood, dairy, and deli items.

Get your orders for Thanksgiving in now, Newton said. Hand-slaughtered whole turkeys are 14 to 15 pounds for $3.99 per pound.

Since 2001, the Berks location of this local supermarket chain has offered halal meat. Turkeys from an Amish farm in Lancaster arrive at the 40,000-square-foot store in the first 10 days of November. Visitors can find 10 to 22 pound birds for about $2.79 or so per pound (prices change each year).

Where to find kosher turkeys?

Kosher is the Jewish dietary law for meat, poultry, and fish. The animal must be hand-slaughtered painlessly, have its internal organs inspected by a trained person or bodek, salted or broiled to extract blood, supervised by a reputable Orthodox Rabbinic authority, and other protocols.

For five and half years, Rabbi Shloime Isaacson’s gourmet kosher market has been a community favorite. The market specializes in kosher grocery items and products, catering, and ready made pizza, sushi, and other takeout. There are also Judaica (religious) items and kosher wine.

From kosher chicken distributors in Pennsylvania and New York, order whole turkeys ranging from 10 to 14 pounds at $4.99 to $5.69 per pound. Turkey legs, turkey breast, and turkey London broil are also available. Keep an eye out online for holiday specials.
