Hot sauce can taste like much more than just peppers and vinegar, and Super Bowl Sunday might be the time to try some new flavors.

Last year, when a Los Angeles company launched a sauce based on black truffles, it took off fast, with Oprah selecting it as one of her “Favorite Things." The Truff sauce, now available at Di Bruno Bros., tastes sweet and hot, with that distinctive truffle flavor infusing every bite. It can go on everything from burgers and fries to eggs and soup.

The company Hank Sauce, a line of sauces that grew out of the founders' Sea Isle City restaurant, also has experimented with flavors, making sauces with honey habanero and herbs, as well as one focused on cilantro. The “Cilanktro” sauce, available at specialty stores like Green Aisle as well as at local Acmes, is tangy, bright, and flavorful, with a light consistency that pairs well with tacos or nachos, as well as with seafood or salads. — Allison Steele
