IBX’s AmeriHealth Caritas swung back to a profit last year, boosted by higher Medicaid rates

The Medicaid insurer, jointly owned with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, returned to strong revenue growth.

Independence Health Group’s Medicaid unit, AmeriHealth Caritas, had net income of $138 million last year, a sharp swing from a $199 million loss in 2024. Higher Medicaid rates and other actions improved performance, company officials said.

The results, reported in the latest audited financials statements of Independence’s partner Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, also showed a return to strong revenue growth. The Medicaid insurer had $28.1 billion in revenue in 2025, up 15% from $24.3 billion the year before.

The return to a double-digit revenue increase — from a 3% increase in 2024 — happened even though the company won no new state contracts to manage Medicaid benefits. AmeriHealth Caritas operates in 13 states and Washington D.C. Pennsylvania accounts for more than half of the company’s overall revenue.

AmeriHealth Caritas collected nearly $16 billion in revenue under contracts with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. The company covered 771,199 Pennsylvanians for physical health and 176,427 for community services, including nursing homes, at the end of last year. AmeriHealth Caritas is the biggest insurer in both of those categories.

In an email last week, AmeriHealth Caritas officials attributed last year’s turnaround to “work with state partners to support reliable access to high-quality care for the members we serve.”

The statement also said the gain came from more than higher rates. Actions “to strengthen performance in a healthcare environment shaped by higher utilization, member acuity, pharmacy cost pressure, and Medicaid policy and program changes” contributed to the improvement, the company said.
