A Gloucester County nursing home was fined nearly $200,000 for understaffing.

The nursing home was fined for violating staffing standards on 196 days, regulators said.

New Jersey regulators fined Promedica Skilled Nursing & Rehab — Washington Township $196,000 for not having enough staff on 196 days, mostly this year, according to a notice published last week by the New Jersey Department of Health.

Nursing home surveyors found evidence of understaffing during inspections on Sept. 30, May 1, and Feb. 24 of this year, as well as during an inspection on July 1, 2022, according to the notice dated Oct. 18.

The state health department did not include further details in the penalty notice. New Jersey requires nursing homes to have one certified nurse aide for every eight residents during the day shift, one direct care staffer for every 10 residents during the evening shift, and one direct care staffer for every 14 residents overnight.

The 120-bed nursing home at 378 Fries Mill Rd in Sewell has a one-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the lowest performance level under the government’s quality rating system. Officials there did not respond to requests for comment this week.

In March, New Jersey regulators received an application for a transfer of the facility’s ownership from Promedica to a company called Sewell SNF Operations LLC, which is owned by Moshe Sonnenschein, Schlomo Goldberger, Pinchos Bak, and David Herzka. It’s not clear if that transaction has closed.
