An Atlantic County grand jury has indicted the owners of a dog that was allegedly exposed to heroin at a Hammonton Walmart last year, requiring police to administer Narcan to revive it.

Clinton Danks, 58, and Kristina Meyers, 37, both of Hammonton, are charged with animal cruelty and possession of heroin, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said. Both charges are third-degree offenses.

Police arrested Danks and Meyers on Nov. 17 after bystanders reported an unresponsive Yorkshire terrier at the Hammonton Walmart. When police arrived, a bystander was attempting to revive the dog, which was unable to breathe.

Investigators determined that the dog had been exposed to heroin by its owners, Danks and Meyers, prosecutors said.

Authorities administered a pediatric dose of Narcan to the dog, which revived and stabilized it. Police arrested Danks and Meyers at the scene.
