WILLINGBORO The N.J. State Library has awarded the Willingboro Public Library a $1,000 multicultural-program award for its nearly yearlong initiative focusing on Africans in the community.

The annual Multicultural Programming Award honors the series "African Immigrants in New Jersey: A Celebration." The initiative includes lectures, book discussions, art shows, and other events in the name of dispelling stereotypes, town library officials said. The program began in September and is to continue through July.

Funded by the N.J. Council for the Humanities, the series was organized with the help of the library's African Advisory Board, established in 2009 as an outreach program for immigrants.
