A Pennsylvania state lawmaker is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an angry motorist who punched and knocked out a school crossing guard Monday in Delaware County.

State Sen. Anthony H. Williams announced the reward offer on Wednesday and called the assault on the young woman in Darby Borough “an outrageous and despicable act of cowardice.”

The Darby Borough Police Department said the attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Sixth and Walnut Streets outside the Walnut Street Elementary School.

Video surveillance showed a man getting out of a gold Nissan Altima as the crossing guard, a young woman, was helping students, Mayor Joar Dahn said Tuesday.

The unidentified man, who was shouting obscenities, pursued the frightened woman down the street next to a school bus, then grabbed her and punched her in the face, Dahn said. The woman then fell backward onto the ground and was briefly knocked unconscious.

“This individual targeted someone whose only duty was to protect our children and ensure their safety. Such conduct has absolutely no place in our community,” Williams, a Democrat whose district includes the borough, said in a statement.

“The people of Darby will not be intimidated by senseless violence. We stand united in support of our crossing guards and all those who serve our neighborhoods with integrity and care,” Williams said.

Anyone with information about the attack was asked to email Darby Borough police at kcollins@darbypd.org.
