And it’s all “love” for A.J. Brown

Remote controls all across the Greater Philadelphia region certainly earned their keep last night with Phillies-Marlins, Sixers-Knicks, and Flyers-Hurricanes all on at the same time.
Of the three, it was the Flyers who kept Philly on the edge of its seat as last night’s showdown in Raleigh, N.C., took overtime to decide a winner, as Carolina scored the winner to take a 2-0 series lead.
The Sixers looked less than impressive as the game appeared over before it was ever able to truly take off. Now, the Knicks have the advantage following a 39-point victory in Game 1 of their second-round series.
In between all of it, we were live-blogging, social posting, and reporting for your viewing pleasure. Take a peek at our coverage of all three teams:

To call it a rough night for the Sixers would be pulling punches. On a day’s rest, the Sixers traveled to Madison Square Garden and were pummeled by the third-seeded Knicks, 137-98. The Sixers became the third consecutive win for the Knicks by 25 points or more.
But we’re here to dissect what happened to the Sixers last night. Inquirer writer DeAntae Prince has the following takeaways.
Up next: The series continues at MSG on Wednesday (7 p.m., ESPN) before coming home to Philly for two games beginning Friday night.
What we’re …
👀 Watching: Who might be next up as athletic director at La Salle with the departure of Ashwin Puri to St. Joseph’s?
🏀 Explaining: Why the Sixers chose to place single-game ticket restrictions on second-round games. Two words: Knicks fans.
🦅 Sharing: Who we believe Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean is dating, because we know you all want to know.
⚽ Applauding: The rise of Ventnor City, N.J. native B.J. Callaghan as head coach of Major League Soccer’s Nashville SC.
🥊 Announcing: The return of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship to Philly on July 3. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow.
A.J. Brown might be in the headlines for his fraught relationship with the Eagles, but during his most recent youth camp in Allentown, he squashed any notion that he was disgruntled, choosing instead to keep it with the youngsters in attendance.
“I love you all, I don’t care what you hear out there, I love you all,” Brown said as he addressed both campers — and their fee-paying parents. “You understand? It’s love.”
He then had the kids huddle up before bellowing out a collective “Eagles!” as a group. If there’s beef, you couldn’t tell, as Brown’s most recent event was truly for the kids. See for yourself.
Don Mattingly wants to peek under the hood.
One week after the Phillies installed him as the interim manager, Mattingly will meet with multiple departments during the upcoming homestand to review all aspects of the team’s play, a periodic exercise that the Blue Jays undertook when he was Toronto’s bench coach.
Good luck making sense of the team’s defense.
Based on metrics and the eye test, the Phillies are among the worst defensive teams in the sport. But the depth of their problems varies depending on the data point.
When the Phillies return home to open a series against the A’s, they should get their closer back.
Last night, the Phillies improved to 6-1 under Mattingly thanks to a blast by Bryce Harper and a gem from Aaron Nola.
Next: Cristopher Sánchez (2-2, 2.90 ERA) will start against Athletics righty Luis Severino (2-2, 4.46) in the series opener at 6:40 tonight (NBCSP).
On Monday, New Jersey became the 21st state to recognize girls’ flag football as a high school sport. Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, the state’s interscholastic athletic association will welcome the over 140 schools that fielded a team to turn their program into a full-fledged varsity program.
“The rise of girls flag football in New Jersey reflects a strong collaborative effort, and we’re thankful to the many partners who have supported student-athletes throughout this journey,” Colleen E. Maguire, NJSIAA executive director, wrote in a statement.
Inquirer writer Isabella DiAmore has more on the ruling.

May 5, 1904: History at the expense of a Philly team took place today as former Boston pitcher Cy Young (heard of him?) pitches the first perfect game in Major League Baseball history as his Americans’ team defeated the Philadelphia A’s (now Oakland), 3-0.
“The Flyers piled up the should haves Monday night, and against the Hurricanes, against the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, that’s a surefire way to lose a game that could have been won. They didn’t necessarily deserve to lose. But in the NHL playoffs, ‘deserve’s got nothing to do with it.’” — The latest from Sielski unpacked the Flyers’ overtime loss in Game 2 as the series shifts to Philly.
🧠 Trivia time
Win or lose in this playoff series, we are witnessing the rise of two current Sixers in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, who are shoo-ins for jersey retirement after their Hall of Fame pacing careers. Your question today is, who was the first Sixers player to have his jersey retired by the franchise?
A) Wilt Chamberlain
B) Charles Barkley
C) Hal Greer
D) Julius “Dr. J” Erving
What you’re saying about the Sixers
We asked: What are your predictions for the Sixers-Knicks second-round series?
The Sixers have not fared well against the Knicks in recent years, especially in the playoffs. The Knicks will be favored, of course, but I think the Sixers have momentum and desire for revenge and can do it, but it will be a tough road for sure. Bet very few younger fans, if any, know the origin of the team’s Knickerbocker name. — Everett S.
Less a prediction and more just a melancholy concern, about the Knick fan takeovers: while the day-trippers are certainly a thing, part of the issue also has to be the ongoing trend of former ‘New Yorkers’ who’ve moved down to what they’ve deemed Brooklyn South. Mostly new Fishtowners, gentrification ground zero. An organization I was playing basketball with a couple of years ago literally did a group event at a Knicks-Sixers game, and mostly Knicks fans were involved. Because, of course, it’s a self-selected group of people realizing they can make their money stretch further here than NYC, with Sixers games a representative example. — D.W. Stone
