No comparison

There are three things that matter when choosing a president: experience, vision, and character. President Joe Biden spent 36 years in the Senate and served two terms as vice president. He has strengthened NATO and worked with world leaders to protect Ukraine. His domestic accomplishments include rebuilding our infrastructure, expanding benefits for veterans, boosting semiconductor research, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and investing in clean energy. During his second term, he wants to expand health care, fight climate change, have sensible gun control, and make taxes more equitable.

Donald Trump spent his career as a real estate developer. During his four years as president, he provided a large tax cut for the wealthy while drastically increasing the national debt. He nominated three U.S. Supreme Court justices who have restricted women’s rights. He bungled the COVID-19 crisis with denials and false information. He made 30,573 false or misleading claims during his four years in office. Both men are old for the job, but when you look at what really matters, there is no comparison.

Beyond debate

President Joe Biden asks us to focus on the last 3.5 years rather than his alarming 90 minutes at the debate. If we follow his advice, we see many other areas of concern. He has presided over unprecedented inflation that continues to stress most Americans. His immigration policies have allowed millions of unvetted immigrants to flow into our country, and we can only hope this policy decision does not result in a terrorist attack. Starting with the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden’s flawed foreign policies have resulted in global instability and the loss of respect by our adversaries. We are far less safe domestically and internationally than before he took office. History will show that his detriments have outweighed his achievements.

Bad times

As Donald Trump attests, he knows nothing of Project 2025 as our country grows ever closer to turning back the clock to 1950. Should the Republicans win in November, we will have to change our Pledge of Allegiance to say, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the discontented states of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, totally divided, under a Christian God, with liberty and justice for men only.” Born in 1945, I lived through back-alley abortions, gay people hiding in closets with no chance of marrying the ones they love, Bible reading in the classroom, needing a man’s signature to get a credit card in my name, career choices of either teacher or nurse, and many other policies that favored white, straight men. Voting for Trump will ensure a return to all those inequities. We can’t afford to let that happen to our children.
