Nutter: NRA plan is a "completely dumb ass idea"

Mayor Nutter took to the airwaves Wednesday to tell people how he really feels about NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre's saying that schools should be staffed with armed guards to prevent tragedies like the Newtown, Conn., massacre.

To make his point, he applied the logic of that plan to the ambush shooting of firefighters in western New York -- and then added some color.

"I guess out of last week's bizarre press statement – it wasn't a press conference – I guess that Mr. LaPierre would say that firefighters need to have armed guards go with them. I think it just shows that that was a completely dumb ass idea from that start with the announcement last week," Nutter said on MSNBC.

Nutter, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, has been a leading voice for stronger gun-control measures since the shooting in Connecticut. He has also been prone to cursing in front of the media, especially when discussing criminals.

Maybe he wanted to make sure the public's attention didn't wander as the Newtown shooting fades into the past. After all, there's nothing like a solid on-air cuss to stir things up again.

The mayor was able to stick to G-rated language to describe his plan.

"We need to ban assault weapons. We need to ban the high capacity clips and magazines. We need serious background information system upgrade," Nutter said.
