State Sen. Larry Farnese (D, Phila.) is planning to introduce a measure that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition in Pennsylvania, his office announced Wednesday.
Adam Lanza, the shooter in the Newtown, Ct., massacre, used an assault rifle to do most of the damage in his rampage. Many federal officials, including President Obama, have warmed to the idea of renewing a national ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004.
Farnese's measure, however, is unlikely to become law because Republicans control Gov. Corbett has said he doesn't think new gun legislation is necessary.
The South Philly senator is also pushing to close the "Florida loophole," create mandatory-minimum sentences for carrying illegal guns and other measures.
