Top Media Scholar Phyllis Kaniss Passes Away

We were saddened to learn that Phyllis Kaniss, a media scholar at Penn, has died from complications related to cancer.

Kaniss was a brilliant teacher and writer, who cared passionately about city politics and believed in public engagement. She authored the great book, "The Media and the Mayor's Race," which details press coverage of the 1991 mayoral election. You can read the Inquirer obituary here.

WHYY reporter Dave Davies has a beautiful tribute to Kaniss on his Newsworks blog. He said:

"She was an Oxford Circle girl who got a Ph.D. and an Ivy League job, but never forgot where she came from. She loved the city, and believed in public service and the power of truth."
