Crescentville gym cleared after bomb scare

Planet Fitness' much touted "Judgment Free Zone" apparently doesn't apply when a member is threatening to blow up said zone.

"He was clearly on drugs or something," Jason Morales, the assistant manager of the gym's Crescentville franchise on Adams Avenue near Rising Sun, said of a man whose bomb threat closed the gym temporarily today.

"He just kept flipping about, but we really couldn't understand what he was trying to get across."

Morales said the man, who was formerly a member of the gym, came into the lobby at 9 p.m. Wednesday and started an argument with one of the employees.

He then left, and came back about 1 a.m. this morning, Morales said, carrying a box similar to those used by the military to store ammunition.

"At that point, he was going berserk," Morales said. "He kept screaming that he was going to blow up the gym."

Police were called to the scene about 2:45 a.m. and arrested the man outside the gym after the building had been evacuated, according to Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman.

The Bomb Disposal Unit was dispatched to the scene, but cleared the area without incident about an hour later.

No information on the suspect's identity was available.
