Mother and son wounded in crossfire during North Philly shooting

A mother and her son were recovering from gunshot wounds Sunday night after cops say they were caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting in North Philadelphia.

Police said a maroon two-door car pulled up on Parrish Street near 10th just after 6:30 p.m. and its occupants began firing at a group of people standing on the block, who then returned fire at the car.

The 36-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son were each hit once. She took a bullet to the knee, cops said, and the teen was hit in the lower back. Both were rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital and listed in stable condition.

The maroon coupe was last seen westbound on Parrish, police said.

Cops were still investigating the shooting later Sunday evening, and were interviewing witnesses at the Central Detective Division. Investigators found five .40-caliber shell casings at the scene.

Neighbors watched as cops scoured the grass outside the nearby Richard Allen Homes in search of shell casings or bullet fragments that may have landed there. The block was crowded on the warm evening when gunfire erupted, police said.

"We just heard it was a mother and child," said one woman who lives a few blocks from the scene, shaking her head. "It's ridiculous."
